These are observed market ranges for asphalt work, drawn from national cost guides published in 2026 (HomeGuide and Angi) and applied to the kinds of jobs Anderson owners ask about. They are not quotes. A paving contractor prices a specific site after measuring it, checking drainage and looking at the base under the old surface, and in Anderson the base is where most of the variation comes from. Use the table to judge whether a bid is in a sensible range, then read the factors below to see why yours may sit high or low.
| Service | Typical Anderson Range |
|---|---|
| New asphalt driveway, installed | $5 - $15 per sq ft |
| Two-car pad, about 400 sq ft | $2,000 - $4,800 |
| Driveway replacement, tear-out and repave | $8 - $15 per sq ft |
| Removing an old asphalt driveway | $1 - $2 per sq ft |
| Asphalt overlay or resurfacing | $3 - $7 per sq ft |
| Driveway patching | $2 - $5 per sq ft ($100 - $500 per patch) |
| Crack filling | $1 - $3 per linear ft |
| Commercial parking lot, new pavement | $2.50 - $7 per sq ft |
| Tar and chip surface | $1 - $5 per sq ft |
| Asphalt millings drive, installed | $3 - $8 per sq ft |

What Changes the Price?
The base. On poorly drained ground, which covers much of central Indiana's till plain, a contractor may need to dig out soft clay, lay fabric and add several inches of crushed stone before any asphalt goes down. That work can match the cost of the paving itself on an older Anderson drive.
Size and access. Every paving job carries a fixed cost to bring a paver, roller and crew, so a small pad costs more per square foot than a long lane. Tight side yards, steep aprons and drives that have to be paved in sections to keep a garage usable also add labor.
The right-of-way. Work on an apron, curb cut or sidewalk inside Anderson's road right-of-way needs a city permit, a bond and insurance, and a state route needs an INDOT permit and usually a culvert. Those requirements add paperwork, days and sometimes concrete work to a bid.
Asphalt prices and the calendar. Asphalt binder is refined from crude oil, so hot-mix prices follow oil markets from season to season. Late in the fall, the minimum air temperatures Indiana sets for thin layers are harder to meet on Anderson afternoons, so small resurfacing jobs can slip to spring.
A careful bid names the square footage, the depth of stone base, the compacted asphalt thickness, how the edges will be finished, how water will drain and who pulls any permit. When two bids differ by thousands of dollars, the difference is almost always in those lines. The quote form on this site sends a request to an independent paving contractor who can measure the job and put those details in writing.
What the national figures assume
HomeGuide's 2026 driveway figures assume a standard residential section of two to three inches of compacted asphalt over six to eight inches of compacted gravel base, and they price a 400 square foot two-car pad at $2,000 to $4,800 and a 1,000 square foot drive at $5,000 to $12,000. Angi's 2026 range for professional installation is wider, $7 to $15 per square foot including labor, with an average project near $5,348.
Replacement costs more than new construction on open ground because the old surface has to come out first. Angi puts removal at $1 to $2 per square foot and grading and leveling at $5 to $10 per square foot where the ground needs reshaping, which is why a tear-out on an older Anderson lot often prices at $8 to $15 per square foot all in.
Rural drives: gravel, millings and tar and chip
On long country lanes the per-square-foot price decides the surface. Angi's 2026 figures put a typical gravel driveway at about $1,800, with crushed limestone at $30 to $40 per ton, and a long 2,000 square foot rural drive at $3,500 to $6,000 or more. Recycled asphalt millings cost $10 to $20 per ton as material and $3 to $8 per square foot installed, and tar and chip runs $1 to $5 per square foot, with double-layer work at the upper end.
The cheaper surfaces carry more upkeep. Gravel needs regrading and fresh stone, tar and chip needs another seal layer about every ten years, and millings need rolling to stay firm. Over twenty years the gap to hot-mix asphalt narrows, and the right choice depends on the length of the lane and how much traffic it carries.
Culverts, grading and drainage
Where a rural drive crosses a roadside ditch it needs a culvert, and on state highways INDOT requires one of at least 15 inches for private drives. Angi's 2026 guide puts culvert replacement at $1,000 to $9,000, averaging about $4,500, with a 20-foot pipe itself costing roughly $700 in plastic or $800 in metal. Grading a new drive or reshaping one that ponds adds cost that the paving figures above do not include.
Asphalt Paving Pricing Questions
Why can two paving quotes for the same driveway be thousands apart?
Usually because they describe different jobs. One bid may skim the old surface with a thin overlay while the other removes it, rebuilds the stone base and paves a thicker layer. Compare the square footage, the base depth, the compacted asphalt thickness, the edge finish and the drainage plan line by line. A low price that leaves out the base is often the more expensive choice after two or three Indiana winters.
Is an overlay a false economy on a very old driveway?
It can be. An overlay at $3 to $7 per square foot costs far less than replacement, but it only lasts when the stone underneath still carries weight. Over a failed base, cracks and sunken spots reappear in the new layer within a few seasons. If the old drive has potholes, soft areas or standing water, paying for removal and a rebuilt base is usually cheaper over the life of the pavement.
Do asphalt prices change through the year?
They can. Hot-mix asphalt uses a binder refined from crude oil, so plant prices move with oil markets, and demand peaks in the summer. Late fall brings a scheduling squeeze because thin layers need warmer air than October and November reliably offer in Anderson. Owners who get a quote in late summer usually have the widest choice of dates.
What should a written paving estimate include?
At minimum: the square footage, removal of the old surface if any, the depth and type of stone base, the compacted thickness of asphalt, how edges will be finished, grading and drainage, who obtains any right-of-way or highway permit, the 811 locate, cleanup, and the payment terms. An estimate that lists only a price per square foot leaves too much open to interpretation.
